| In many steel plants, the Torpedo cars (Torpedo ladles) are no longer just transfer containers, but very important equipment used for liquid metal treatments such as de-sulfurization and de-siliconization. These practices entail higher temperatures, higher metal / slag turbulence due to reagent injection and greater chemical attack. Consequently, the service life of the current Tar impregnated Alumina bricks is dramatically reduced. |
|
In order to restore the Torpedo cars availability, Saint-Gobain Ceramics proposes alumina-carbon-SiC bricks, the Alfrax® TC family. A range of Alumina-Graphite-Silicon Carbide formulations (AGS) was developped to enable balanced lining designs as every area of the Torpedo car have different needs.
Proper lining design including brick dimensions, joint thickness, mortar selection and insulating back up are critical for service life.
Our expertise in material science, our computer design and Finite Element Modeling technologies as well as our knowledge of the iron making processes, give us the technical edge when it comes to solving Torpedo car refractory lining problems
The table below indicates typical materials recommendation for Torpedo ladles, especially in case of de-sulfurization treatment. The mouth is lined with Bauxite based castable monolithics Alfrax®175 and Alfrax®185.
