Domestic waste conversion reduces the volume of debris sent to landfills and offers potential energy recovery methods. In waste-to-energy plants, the high plastic content of the trash, combined with glass and scrap metals, creates process conditions requiring special silicon carbide and alumina refractory materials.

Alumina-based and silicon carbide bricks, shapes and castables from Saint-Gobain offer outstanding thermal stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Saint-Gobain is recognized worldwide for engineering special shapes and developing high-performance materials, including Carbofrax®, Refrax® and Cryston® refractory SiC bonded shapes. These engineered special shapes provide better fit and boiler tube protection for reduced maintenance and downtime over the lifetime of your equipment.
Three major tile designs:
The so-called “45° or SONITHERM System” is characterized by a blind anchor hole at an angle of 45 degrees. The blind holes fully protect the metallic anchors from corrosion and a thin wall thickness ensures a high heat transfer to avoid ash build-up. The system is usable only on vertical or sloped walls. The small gap between the tiles and the water wall is filled with a specially designed heat- conductive SiC mortar.
Two T-Clip designs:
The original T-Clip tile system fully protects anchors and is usable regardless of the water wall slope, including ceilings. This tile design has been manufactured for more than 20 years. The T-Clip design can be used in three different configurations:
The new T-Clip PRO tile design/system has been manufactured for more than five years. This design offers optimum protection with a quicker and more precisely defined installation. This system is only used in one configuration: system back-filled with self flowing SiC castable.
Single boiler tubes protection:
Saint-Gobain has many years of experience in protecting single boiler tubes against erosion and corrosion in the superheater area, where the flue gas temperature is approximately 600- 800°C.
Ceramic tube shields offer easy and quick installation. The standard length is 250mm and the available wall thickness is 8-10mm. The Cryston® CN 550 CD material is a high thermal- conductive and wear-resistant nitride bonded SiC. An SiC based, high strength, air setting cement is used for the assembly.
In less severe corrosion zones, the use of gunnable SiC monolithics with a SiC content ranging from 55-90%, applied on studded water wall panels, may reduce initial costs. Where gunning is not applicable, trowelling mixes having 80-90% SiC content are available. For the grate wall that is exposed to severe abrasion, 80-85% SiC content gunning cement or special SiC tile shapes are recommended. In some zones, alumina-based monolithics are also installed.
