Advancal® top rings minimize oxidation of the carbon wall top. They are state-of-the-art for low and mid amperage cells ( < 200,000 amps). SiC soldier blocks are used especially when boosting mid and high amps cells. SiC carbon (or SiC graphite) sandwiches, called combi blocks, currently are in development as part of the latest high-powered cell design.
The degradation of the nitride bonded SiC blocks in aluminum reduction cells is primarily correlated with the development of oxidation and subsequent fluoride attacks. In response, Saint-Gobain’s Advancal® material provides optimal resistance to a combined oxidation and Cryolite attack. Consistent high quality ensures safe, reliable service.
If air gaps develop between the steel shell and sidewall blocks, alter the heat balance and promote back oxidation, Saint-Gobain recommends the specially engineered AnnaPlast 76 and Carbofrax® mortars for realignment and tight, strong sidewall assembly.
